If Nothing Else Comes of This

Against bunker near sand tonight
Thinking of you, dear loving wife
Against the wind and too the odds
I pray again to father GOD

Our mission here seems so endless
Third tour of duty and five friends less
Homeward bound draped by our colors
Peace at last back to their mothers

One who never saw nineteen
Soldier young boy fighting machine
That had my back on foot patrol
Today his eyes I would shut close

My other friends who also toured
These sands of time would too endure
These firefights that would claim them
Today, in sky their souls ascend

We shall miss them and soon will meet
Replacements new who will repeat
Their tour of duty in foreign land
Where eyes virgin turn boy to man

Deaths hand will seek to take one more
With its cold hands knocking on door
With hope we will pry off its fingers
Off new found brother where deaths scent lingers

Before my eyes are those who'll bleed
Praying once more death will not feed
Off another friend we've made
As war does have a price to pay

Maybe this time as we lay here
The stars will shine and GOD will hear
That not one more will live to die
Upon our arms breaking our ties

If nothing else comes of this
It will be war we shall not miss
and in closing we hope you find
A prayer or two, with soldier in mind
