Memories of boys at play
Uninhabited in our day
From Guemes Island half hour away
On the top a Pirates tower
We were kings this our power
We would dream of yesterday
See a powerboat in the bay
To us it was a pirate ship
Would they spy our boat in the slip?
Our weapons just a pointed stick
Off in the distance a killer whale
Or a friendly wave from a boat in sail
All day we would play near night
often returning home seals and whales in sight
We would fish for Salmon off the shore
Often seen the wild rabbits galore
One day a deer swam over looked at us
We would hide and hunt He ignored the fuss
Memories of hat Island in the San Juans.
This was inspired from reading a news article.
I dreamed as a child of coming back and buying
Hat Island. It was not for sale. But this family
bought the Island recently and built a home on
it. A lot of memories came back to me of the
day we fought pirates on Hat Island, and across
the bay Vendovi Island no longer privately owned.
