To a lost friend

I think he must be dead by now
Probably has been for years and years
After hundreds too many ciggies
And gallons too many beers
For a little while we co existed
For a little while he was my friend
But our paths suddenly parted
Bringing that friendship to an end

Or rather putting it on hold

We said see you in the future
If we ever get there
See you in that future
Now you just take care
And then I carried on
For a few more years
Greeting each morning through
A veil of hung over pain and tears

Just putting life on hold

The reunion date came
At long last
The reunion date came
And then slipped past
Too many years from that time
And I just didn't go
I had my forebodings
I suppose I didn't want to know

My life no longer on hold

So long as we didn't meet
He was still alive in my head
Though in my heart I believed
He was long used up and dead
Or maybe I hoped like me
He found a good woman for a wife
And found a new reason
For living and enjoying life

His life no longer on hold

I think he must be dead by now
Probably has been for years and years
After hundreds too many ciggies
And gallons too many beers
For a little while we co existed
For a little while he was my friend
But our paths suddenly parted
Bringing that friendship to an end

To Sgt J.B. in hope he made it like we did.
For a few wild months we raised hell together,
the four musketeers, and then he was posted out.
We carried on in his memory for nearly too long.
