DADDY I WON'T TURN OUT LIKE YOUcontinued from a boy like me: Moms say, "I want you to stay away from Dandy" "He will not amount to nothing, steal your candy." Out there somewhere is a boy just like me Hurt and lonely wanting to be free I never stole or would be alcoholic like dad Who drank all day and came home mad But I dressed poorly, kids stayed away at school I suppose I was scary, big for my age I grew Walked by my house no windows just plywood Mom would have changed things if she could I would fight kids twice my age win or lose Stay at the library turning page after page Between baseball my math teacher--and reading educated Getting a high school diploma Mom was elated And yes the gun misfired when I shot Dad Would I have gone to prison to kill that cad One day I went back to see the old neighborhood And there still living the Mom who mocked me stood "Well Dandy, what have you done with yourself I have to ask?" I am retired remember when I trick or treated in my mask?" "Kids are grown, all gone, Down the street lives my son Don." "Jimmy, he works at Safeway--produce department His house in the neighborhood with weed filled lawn "Really, you see far above up that hill--That's me." It must have been for her a bitter pill the reality For I didn't have to tell her I did quite well For from the bottom some rise while others have fell Somewhere out there is a boy or girl like me Judge us by what we are and not our family For you see dad I would never be a man like you In your alcohol and drug filled life lived a fool Kids like me--change your life study hard in school For you see the man who uses drugs is the fool Mom in heaven I was not raised by a drunk raised by you Remember the bum on skidrow--?from your teaching I grew Poetry Ad-Free Upgrades Vote for this poem
