So You Do   (May 10, 2010 written for June 1987)

The man took a shower
In his clothes
Then went to bed.
I want to leave the earth quietly.
Ray was sleeping in his car
Til they took his dog
And towed his home away.
He said
I want to leave the earth quietly.
Now they measure you
By your whimpering every midnight
You keep perfect time,
Is what the staff laughingly has said.
I want to leave the earth quietly.
They weigh you every morning
So you wear all your clothes.
You order 500 calories,
As of yet, no one's noticed, no one knows.
I want to leave the earth quietly.
The kitchen guy, he thinks you're so damn cute
Looking for signs of life
He delivers your tray
He wants to be your savior in his knight's suit.
I want to leave the earth quietly.
Convinced he'll find your cure,
The quack alters your medications often.
The right synapses are bound to break.
He's nailed you now into your numbing coffin.
I want to leave the earth quietly.
Yuppie boyfriend arrives, so you play his game.
Well-intentioned people know what's best
Pretending your life is still the same.
I want to leave the earth quietly.
But the biggest clue is lost on everyone.
That your time on earth, like an over-ripe fruit, is now past done.
I want to leave the earth quietly
So, you've prepped the awaiting aluminum pod.
Even talked it over quietly with God.
You want to leave the earth quietly.
So you do.

Some things I've written can only be written about
with the passage of a great deal of time.
This was one of them. I respect the integrity,
honesty and real grit in/of this poem.
