Yes, I have seen eye to eye
The shadow lurking that is death
In our youth we are invincible
In a Hydroplane near world record pace
But for me the end of the race
Suddenly I was airborne 360 degrees.
God was with me that day
You see he kept me in the boat
I was out cold and would have drowned
The car was spinning heading for a guard rail
Instead of flipping thrown back to the road
I survived another taste of death
For I was reading the headlines as we spun
And I survived yet another day
"We lost him cannot bring the fever down."
Asian flu 1958 Chicago Great Lakes Naval base
I was taken to the ward where no one came back
Four days in a coma and thanks to a loving nurse
Who would not let me die I lived another day
"Dandy, I have to be honest, this illness
We can make things better--three to five years at most."
Six foot three a hundred thirty pounds--no one could answer
Heah, Doc, I am here today to raise a toast
I still have bouts with this fever just this week
"Prepare yourself three engines gone down."
"Parachute--I am going down with the pilot."
One engine came back on and we landed safely
Oh, yeah, scared to death I would have had to parachute
Two cancer prostate operations and I was bleeding
Rushed in adult diapers to emergency room
Some emergency blood, third operation, I'm here!
For those who ask, "What is Life After Death?
Have been in the tunnel and Angels do wait
I have seen them up close and personal
But things for me are too great to want to go
So many times I have been face to face with death
That when the day comes let me sleep in bed.
But you see I am not ready yet and turn pages
For I believe the best is yet to come
And only then will my work on this planet be done
For each day we live one day closer to the final rest
