i've been a marine now for 20 years
i've been a marine now for twenty years:
i'm anxious as my retirement nears:
i've counted every year month and day:
i bowed my head and i always prayed:
help me lord to make it make it through the day:
help me lord now along my way:
i did my best everywhere that i have been:
i know i was real and never pretend;
i was a good follower i met every test:
i always strived to be the best:
i never forgot where i came from:
in all i did i always had fun:
i faced everyday with a bright shinny face:
i gave it my all for this twenty year race;
my rabk stayed at ssgt. thats as far as i went:
but i led with respect and knew what i meant:
every mission that i had it always got done:
every section i had we were second to none:
i served around the world away from my family:
i look so forward to retire and just be free:
i'm ready to face the civilian life:
with my kids and my wife:
finally we will all settle down:
there wont be no more moving around:
whatever i do its all up to me:
the future is as far as i can see:
as a civilian i know i'll have to do my best:
i know i'll have to pass many a test:
the marine corps will always be in my heart:
the love and loyalty will never part:
once a marine always a marine to the end:
a good marine will always be a true friend:
these last final months will be a challenge to me:
i've gotta hang tough until i am free:
i want to leave the corps at my very best:
right now this is my hardest test:
this race is almost over im almost done;
i'll hold my head high when i know i've won:
i've gotta hang tough theres still time to do:
just think how great i'll feel when its all through:
i've been a marine now for twenty years;
i'm anxious as my retirement nears:
i wouldnt have made it without my family:
and i thank the lord they are still here with me:
we will all stand tall at that final parade:
and be proud of the future we've made:
