My dog and me

Morning breaks, once more the sky is blue
no more dark shadows where demons can hide
clouds drift on by never knowing how beautiful
now the darkness no longer darkens the sky
birds sing their songs, welcoming in the morn
as the screams from my nightmares start to fade
I clear the sleep from my eyes, wondering what of this day…
and if I thought that God ever prayed?

I drink some hot tea and look out upon the day
will the new clouds bring rain or bring shine?
I talk to my dog asking how well he slept that night
then he licks me and I see that he's fine
we go for a walk and take in the morning air
the quietness such a relief from my dreams
the high reaching walls keep quiet the screaming souls
while the blue sky always sets my soul free.

I return to my home and see pictures looking down
my children, my daughters… all three
maybe today one will call and ask just how I am?
but probably… only my dog and me
the day will go by till once more the sun will fall
then the high walls will swallow my screams
till morning will break and bring forth the morning sky
where it will find… just my dog and me.
