Elmo's Poem

When he was young
He was a special kid
People didn't always understand
All the things he did
But to those who loved him
Elmo was just fine

Some called him names
Even to his face
But his good minded heart
They could not erase
I guess that's just the way
That some folks are

His brothers and sisters
They all seemed to change
But as for Elmo
He always stayed the same
You'd be hard to argue
Who had it worse

For thirty years
He went to work
Never complained
Not a single word
At the cards that life had dealt him
He just smiled

Now he's retired from his job
He stays at home
Still the same gentle soul
With a heart of gold
He's a pillar of stone
A stronger man
I think it would be real hard to find

For through all this time
His heart has remained
Clean and pure
And free from the stains
That so many of us
Have to bear with shame

When it comes my time
To leave this place
I just hope that I have done some good things
That might help erase
The many things I did
That I knew wasn't right

Before I stand up
To be judged for eternity
I hope to God
If I might make a single plea
No matter what I've done
Or who I might turn out to be
God
I hope
That you can see
Just a little
Elmo
In me

Elmo is my father's older brother and has always been a very special person. He's nearly blind and deaf now but he has lived his whole life with the mind and a heart of a child.
There are angels here on Earth. One's name just happens to be Elmo.

His picture is posted on the photo page of my website www.apoetslaststand.com along with many others.

1/17/05 Elmo left us today. I know the gates of Heaven were waiting wide-open just for him. His innocence and kind soul will forever be missed but never forgotten.
