Harry Sweeden. My life in verse.

Once I was your superman...

Once I was your superman,
I would hold you up so high
with arms outstretched you could see the world
and feel that you could fly.

Once I was your superman,
I would hold you when you cried
I would keep you close and kiss you soft
until all your fears subside.

Once I was your superman,
that protected you at play
that kept away the dark of night
till shone the light of day .

Once I was your superman,
that watched you as you grew
that felt so proud to be your dad
with every day that's new.

Once I was your superman,
but weakened I'd become
till all I knew, all I loved…
just simply came undone.

Now,
no longer am I your superman,
I am just the one to blame
for every dream and hope that failed
each one will bear my name…
for it matters not what once was true
that once you loved me more
you loved me for the things I was
but it seems that's long before…
before your heart became so cold
and forgot the bond we shared
forgot the dreams that once we held
that always we would care…
forgot the love a father has
and all that he may lose
if the one he love's will fail to see
the pain you put me through.

For my daughter Jessica
