Paul Simon stared at me today
Unapologetically

In the bookstore,
I was making my way through
Romance, Philosophy
then Music
...when he stopped me dead in my tracks

PAUL SIMON--LYRICS, 1964-2011

I thought of you unwrapping this book--
The perfect Christmas present

But...

Time to lay gifts at your feet has flown
Passion's contradictions
The Tender War
That is being in love
Has ended

The campaign where our lives collided,
Begun in your territory among unfamiliar hills
Smeared with russet,
Now ends in the same color....

May time's amnesty
Transform your memory
Into a a vague vision
Of pierced blue on ivory

May I not be shackled by
The feel of Autumn hair in my hands
The blush of bare skin
Bruised lips from rough kisses
Breath, scent when warmth mingled

May I not be imprisoned by
The haze that enveloped us
And pushed the world away
Because we were together

The Tender War
That is being in love
Has ended

* "Courage, man, the hurt cannot be much."

November, 2011

*Shakespeare, Romeo & Juliet, Act III, scene I
