Deep Hollow in a Big Galaxy

Because that's the way it's done
In some places some people
Think is everywhere
Left wide open like a Kansas field
Waiting for a tornado
Protracted perspectives radiating
In three dimensions from a central hub
It could be anything
In the distance
An idea, concept or broken down appliance
Rusting in the field behind the house…

Because that's the way they roll
In the big universe
With the top down
And the wind blowing through your hair
Out here it could be nothing
Just more dark mystery
With whispering women inside
And gullible congregations
Tapping you on the shoulder
Asking you if the end came and went
And did it bother to take the dog?

Cuz that's the way they duz it
Back on the quasar
Where the distance between two points
Is the derivative of the verbal estimate
Made to a foolish woman
For the approximate damage
She's done to the people around her
And, in particular, to her mother
In this blessed community
Of saints and pall bearers
And bent old men with sheltered wives

So that's how it's always been done
In the valley of the milky way
Those wooly sheep and drunken children
Chasing about in the high grass and clover
With minds like butter
And cheeks red as spanked buttocks
Their noses perpetually evacuating viscous
Rivers of fat and tallow
And tuberculosis
Cherubic baubles bubbling and perking
And laughing with divine stupidity

That's the way we make it on the green planet
In secluded valleys and steep hills
Tangled in the genetic weave
Of kindred proximity
With sweat and moonshine
And the sticky heat of summer
Dark night cool water hot blood
Momma don't need to never know
It's how we all got to this holler
The swelling of the seed
And the pouting of the flower

And that's the way they'll do it
Dragging their black holes and gamma rays
Corporate morality and plate glass law
The sharpened edge of the rake of progress
Here to plow the sordid memories we left in forests
And bury truth where it belongs
Where the sun don't shine
And the dogs won't dig it up
Maybe they'll plant a strip mall on top
Or flood the river and
Drown it and bury it forever

Maybe that's the way they should do it
