look at the pictures
do they contain the person that is you

why must we always be commanded to be
smiling
when smiling is so much further from the truth

but there is tension in her eyes, around her lips
look at the pictures
three children staring out at the camera
together for 17 years
longer apart than the years they've lived
look at the pictures
there aren't many tales
but the stories they do and do not tell
look at the pictures
you wish there were more of them
and that you could fill in with the ones you've happily imagined
as well
look at the pictures
sometimes a photograph is all that is left of a memory
but, eventually all pictures become distant history
look at the pictures
you have crammed into your book
gaze into the faces examine all their frozen looks
look at the pictures
you've memorized every detail that you ever could
they will be what's left of your life when it
is through
look at the pictures.
