Poetic-Verses

'' The Day I Almost Died ''

I've woke up in the strangest dream,
In the distance there's a light,
It shines just like a beacon,
So welcoming and bright,

I don't understand what's happened,
But suddenly I see,
A tunnel opening up,
It seems to be beckoning me.

I feel an urge to enter,
But something's saying no,
I've a feeling that I wont come back,
If I decide to go.

I really can't remember,
What's brought me to this place?
But something's telling me inside,
I'll need to fight my case.

One minute I was fighting,
I was trying to avoid the flak,
Dodging bullets and mortar bombs,
We were under serious attack.

I heard a loud explosion,
Then as I turned round to see,
The only one left standing,
Happened to be me.

I really can't explain it ,
No one else was there,
All my mates had disappeared,
But I couldn't tell you where

The strangest thing of all was,
I couldn't hear a thing,
What was this eerie silence?
Just what would it bring.

I looked around my body,
To see if I'd been hurt,
I didn't have a mark on me,
Not even any dirt.

Why was I left standing?
Had all my mates been killed,
I couldn't see dead bodies,
Nor could I see blood spilled.

I felt a warm glow inside,
A need to shed a tear,
Yet, whatever I was going through,
There was no hint of fear.

I never felt endangered,
But I did feel so aware,
That as I moved towards the light,
I could feel a heavenly stare,

I asked myself, where am I,
I've never been here before,
Just then a voice cried out to me,
Please enter through my door.

He said, eternal life is yours,
I'll make you welcome here,
My Grandpa said, come join us,
You've no more need for fear.

I couldn't believe my eyes,
All these people I'd once known,
But they'd all died years ago,
This really had me thrown.

I also seen passed family,
Yet they all seemed so alive,
At this point I felt really scared,
I just prayed I would survive.

There were animals of every kind,
People of all races,
All were mingling having fun,
They all had smiling faces.

I saw the oceans green and blue,
They were full of life,
The sea was calm the air was pure,
No signs of Earthly strife.

The sky was blue the flowers grew,
It was beautiful and serene,
No signs of conflict anywhere,
The grass just looked so green.

It was then I had to ask myself,
Have I just been killed?
Is this really Heaven?
Is this what God has willed?

I then plucked up the courage,
To ask if I could leave,
I said, I want to live again,
Not watch my family grieve.

I pleaded for my life,
Begging, please give me a chance,
Restore my life back on Earth,
I had to make a stance.

He said, give me good reason,
Why should you live again,
I replied I still feel so alive,
I'm crying and in pain.

I also have a wife and kids,
Who need me more than you?
Please let me have another go,
I promise I'll be true.

I never heard another word,
He gave me no reply,
I thought, oh well this must be it,
I must be doomed to die.

At that I felt light headed,
I was moving very fast,
The next thing I remember was,
A feeling of being harassed.

As I awoke I seen my mates,
They were all okay,
They all said in unison,
We hope you're here to stay.

Just then I heard another voice,
Amid chaos all around,
I could hear the doctor say,
At last you've came around.

Thank God indeed I said to her,
I remembered then I cried,
A day etched in my memory as,

‘' The Day I Almost Died''.
