I watch a wave approach, as it steals over the hot beach sand,
Paddling in the tepid water, scooping foam up with my hand,
Gazing idly towards the horizon with a misty vision in my eye,
My far off distant birthplace, where the sea now meets the sky,
Am I now that distant stranger from whence I grew up as a lad,
Played games with my school-friends, went swimming with my dad,
I know not what's become of them, I hear those friends no more,
I wade gently into the ocean leaving a footprint on a foreign shore,
A world is becoming smaller, our loved ones captured on a screen,
From the comfort of our lounge rooms our greetings can now be seen,
A laptop conveys no feelings, for the comfort we yearn so much,
Seeing a face, hearing a voice, but denied the reach out to touch,
Looking lazily at the sinking sun spreading its' gold on the ebbing tide,
Knowing you see the same sun as I, its fading light can be our guide,
If we can share this solar moment, then we can share a distant bond,
Stretching our hands across the oceans, with loved ones far beyond,
