He wore a tall man's pride,
drank a tough man's scotch
whiskey.
Never asked me if I wanted
to be any part of him.
I couldn't fill in
the in between
spaces of his smoke-filled
mind.
I wasn't his kind.
Not even in passing.
"You look just like her."
"Marilyn,"
He said,
with a gaze that appraised
and minimized.
Then,
Cut me down to his size.
So I could swallow the hook
and the false compliment.
If I'd had a clue, I'd have
never glanced a second time.
Tall man, violet-eyed, so hungry.
And why did I let
him touch
my vulnerability,
tear the dragonfly's wings?
He was..
Inside out empty,
and no goodness
scraping its way through.
With him, only greed
and the gnawing hunger.
Leaving me emptied.
