It Breaks My Heart

It breaks my heart when you drive away

the past is just the future with the lights on

It breaks my heart when you drive away,

When I think of the brilliant things you say.

I owe one death to the copper sun,

I owe the summer one dress undone.

Death be not swift for I want to live,

With all the love that I have to give.

I willed the summer one love undone;

I owe one life to the pawnbroker sun.

When I think of all the hours we missed,

When I think of the nights we kissed,

I'll redeem one debt to the dying day:

It breaks my heart when you drive away.

For the summer has gone to white horses

And I must pass for the pleasure of the sun.

The shadows are as important as the light

In the future that we don't mention outright.

It breaks my heart when the morning's out.

It breaks my heart when you drive away.

And the future that we don't talk about

Is found somewhere in yesterday.
