SPRINGTIME IS HERE

SPRING WILD AND FREE

Spring was special when I was a child
after a long winters of being cooped up in our home

After school my sister and I would run home
kick off our shoes and socks and head for the lush green meadows

We raced the wind never catching it
followed the robins to their nest to take a peek inside

We sang and let the wind
carry our voices to other places

We wondered down to the brook that watered the meadow
sat on its bank with our feet in the water that was still cold from the winter

Often we squealed with delight
for being alive and able to run free

We ate the early blackberries that grew wild
holding their sweet juices in our mouths for an extra minute

To rest we sat in the spring clover
making clover chains to wear as leis around our neck

The spring winds brought the smell of wild onions
and wild spring flowers growing tall and free

We  lay on our backs in a field of buttercups looking into the sky
Watching birds flying way up high

We talked of being grown and flying like the birds
Going to new and different places seeing all kinds of sites

We promised we would always return to that home
with the meadows green and lush

But as the saying goes
you can't go home again

It makes me smile to recall those carefree days
of childhood and the innocents of the time back then

I wish all youngsters could know what it was like
to be carefree and romp in the meadows in the spring like we did

Song of Solomon 2:12

The flowers appear on the earth; the time of singing has come,
 and the voice of the turtledove is heard in our land;
