 The American Flag

She is lifted high to wave
To the free and to the brave.
Everyone who really knows her
Knows it’s not the wind that blows her.

 Those familiar with her fame
Hail what the history books proclaim...
Not by worshipping her wars
But weeping for her battle scars.

She’s seen heroes fight and fall.
She’s covered some and cried for all.
When seemingly against all odds...
She’s made it by the grace of God.

Sometimes smeared and stained with blood
And dragged through miles of muck and mud.
Spit upon, hated, and burned...
 Ignored by those so unconcerned.

But it’s not wind that keeps her stance...
She isn’t moving by mere chance.
We know the force it takes to fly her...
Each soldier's last breath blowing by her.
