A LESSON TO LEARN?

What lessons can we hope to learn
From Jacob’s wrestling match?
Do all stories in the Word of God
Have some sort of spiritual catch?

Could the term personification
Of spiritual warrior be applied?
That Jacob would not be deterred
Certainly tends to coincide!

 Could this present a picture
Of how we ought to pray?
Make every effort to prevail
Until the answer’s on the way?

Just what was Jacob’s outcome?
What lesson did he learn?
Could it have been humility?
Could pride have been a bridge to burn?

What’s the purpose of his wound?
He proved not to be a wimp!
Yet he was warranted a life
Of walking with a limp!

God proposed a change of name
 And renamed him Israel.
A convert to the covenant?
What truth does this tale tell?

One fact that we cannot forget
Is we all walk with a limp.
It may not be seen as physical
But not a one of us can skimp.

We may have done what this declares
We’ve walked that road too far
But since our covenant with Christ
We’re NOT who it says we are!!!

Dedicated to Joan and Jimmie

Genesis 32:24-31
24 And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day.
25 And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob's thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him.
26 And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me.
27 And he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob.
28 And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.
29 And Jacob asked him, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name? And he blessed him there.
30 And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.
31 And as he passed over Peniel  the sun rose upon him, and he halted upon his thigh
