 Mixed Up Confusion

Say it isn't so that you are overly sentimental.
Tell me you aren't all that much attached to me.
Tell me you didn't steal my heart, it's only a rental.
We don't need to be too close, I'm sure you agree...

Walk me backward to the place where we first met;
Where we exchanged glances, then pleasantries.
I missed a step somewhere, don't understand it yet.
I thought we were only exchanging irrelevancies...

How is it that you grew prettier and nicer every day?
When we first met, you were more plain and ordinary.
The more you come around and the longer you stay,
My reasons for hanging around are more ancillary....

You have a great set of magnets that pull on me,
Much, much closer than I ever intended to allow.
I'm fighting hard, I can't let the wrong part rule me.
But I just can't seem to let you get away somehow...
