Scars of life

Trying to surrender the thoughts that still confuse me
though questions of my journey sometimes arise
if I had turned a different corner and found the sunshine waiting
maybe life would not so swiftly have passed me by?

For each day was cloaked in darkness, no light to guide me forward
and the shadows always made me feel alone
there was no-one to guide me, or someone to confide in
there were just four walls that saw my life unfold.

Whenever I would scream out, I would only hear my echo
while the demons of the night would wait their turn
to question and confuse me, then to finally abuse me
it seemed it was just one more thing I had to learn.

Now that I am older, and the winter feels much colder
I still fail to see the lesson that was learned
so in the hope of sweet surrender, ill one day not remember
the scars of life I did not choose to earn!
