 Side Doors, Broken Floors

A dream within a dream outside reality, there is no end
I don't know if dreams run circular or toward infinity
There's an occasional side door but it's always locked
Is this the devil's work or a member of the Trinity....

I pass the subway girls, pieces of metal imbedded in faces
They are riding down there with the women of sixteen kids
Cardboard cut-out welfare queens the world owes a living
They're burned out on crack, have fallen, hit the skids....

Down to a lower dream where creatures scuttle in the dark
Doing deeds past atrocious to victims unsuspecting
I swear they would pull the wings from a meadowlark
There is no thing living or dead that they are respecting....

The saddest thing of all, to think there are levels even lower
Beyond the unspeakable, unknowable, unthinkable things
When you dream you can go to the lowest possible floor
The ground cracks, opening other levels, and all they bring....

Wheels within wheels, a dream within a nightmare dream
How can a world look so lovely, yet be so vicious too
Circles within circles, a dream can be such a lovely thing
Time to climb back to the surface where the sky is blue....
