“When all is Said and Done!”
We attempted dreaming to avoid the days of reality, for
the sound of silence quiets the roar of the cannons,
the sun’s burning reflection from the enemies’ shiny
bayonets, and the blood, curdling order of “Charge!”
Up the ladders and over the ramparts we charged in
our death defining act, into the jaws of hell, fire and
brimstone, in an attempt  to stop the Kaiser’s attack.

Day and night, the sounds of war pierced our bleeding ears,
On the last cold day of December- 1914, “Hold or die!” came
the “order”, here in the fields of Flanders, and
French and German blood flowed together as one.

Today only red poppies and white crosses mark this spot,
Listen, you may hear in the dead of silence, the blood curdling
echo of the command: “Charge!”
Charge we did and here, dead we lie.
When all is said and done, only red
poppies and silence will have won!
