1953 Disaster

Sixty years ago,
While still just a child,
Further down the coast
The seas went wild
Overwhelming defences,
Spreading mud and sand
As it inexorably flowed
Inward to drown the land.

Many case of heroism
But still the cost
Of homes destroyed
And many lives lost.
It was a freak they said
But it will happen again:
They don't know where
And they don't know when.

Money has been spent,
Defences have been tested:
An uneasy peace knowing
Some day they'll be bested.
Sixty years ago
Memories don't go away
So this anniversary is
A Remembrance Day.
