Burning Bridges

I saw the burning bridges
as they fell beside my feet;
the past now blackened
ashes on the ground.
The memories still haunt me
as my mind tries to retreat;
a moment of sweet peace
not to be found.
I’ve caged my heart and
purged my soul, but thoughts
of you remain
I’m lost in time, but what
have I to gain?
I thought I’d find a refuge
once the bridges had been burned;
but, oh, the painful lesson
I have learned.
