ramblings and things

City Station, Leeds June 2010

there's a certain kind of contentment
chatting with an old squaddie mate
talking about the good times
and those things you both hate.
and the years roll away
as though they'd never been.
and suddenly you're back
in those days of your teens

more than forty years ago.
and you meet friends of friends
until its one whole gang of pals
old and new as the party ends
and you all shake hands.
and each goes his ways
with half made plans for
the next re union day.

if you've never worn the uniform
it's hard to understand
the loyalty forged
in an old squaddie gang;
they talk the same language,
they bring back your youth,
and those intervening years can add
a little gloss to a maybe long past truth.
