You can always tell the old veteran
As he stands proudly and salutes the flag
As proud Americans we all salute the flag
At the beginning of the game start of the parade
The proud veterans salutes every flag passing by
I remember even in my sad childhood
There was one male influence who stood above all others
Grandpa was a ship builder all his life
Though he never served in uniform I knew his patronage
One of the most precious times was watching football games
At the start of every game was the National Anthem
A holiday the family were buzzing about as Grandpa and I
arose in place stood and saluted every flag
We sang in perfect harmony both out of key
The Army-Navy game was special
I was going to grow up and be a Marine
After all they only took a few proud men
"Your eye site is bad you are deaf in one ear
Son, you are too tall to serve in a Submarine!"
Disappointed I went home and enlisted in the National guard
Ammo handler, still in high school. The US Army reserves
Grandpa was proud, reality I was a teletype operator
Off we go into the Wild blue yonder I joined the Air Force
"Son you are still deaf in one ear nearly blind
Son you cannot fly jets but you can be a Medic
We are sending you to Great Lakes Naval Base!"
Navy Base---? I joined the Air Force to fly
"Son you did basic in Army and Air Force
You need to experience the Navy boot camp and Oh,
The Marines use Navy Corpsmen the drill Sergeant is a Marine sergeant"
"Grandpa--remember watching those games
Arguing over which branch of the service was the best
I salute all flags passing by and proud of all who serve
And Grandpa, he is sitting in heaven waiting for me to arrive
I know he always bet on Army but he was shipbuilder
I remember the two of us standing in front of a TV
Every Thanksgiving both of us saluting and singing off key
And Sis, Grandma and Mom stop what they were doing and join us
May God bless America for in God we trust
