EVERY NIGHT WE BECAME THE FEAST

Photobucket

I remember those long hot nights guarding the wire
Scanning every single inch out there in front of us
Watching intently for any signs of movement by the VC

It was so damn hot out there not a breeze at all
The foul smell from musty old sandbags and sweat
It hung in the air all night long as we watched

Shortly after the sun had set for the evening
Came the constant buzzing of the giant insects
As they prepared to feast on our bodies & blood

It was useless to even try to fight them all off
They wouldn't be deprived of their nightly feast
As they continued their relentless attacks on us

It was hard enough trying to keep a sharp vigil
For you never knew when the VC would attack you
And after awhile we just got use to being bitten

As we had become part of their nightly food chain
Until the morning sun made it's appearance to all
Then and only then did they retreat from the feast

And people don't understand why I'm not fond of going
out camping and enjoying nature, it's because in that
one year I had enough nature to last me a lifetime.
