DON'T FLY AWAY LITTLE RED BIRD

DON'T FLY AWAY LITTLE RED BIRD

Dedicated in memory of my mother who
passed away a month and a day ago today....

I'm as slow as the length of a winter's season
Catching a lonely cloud covered ride
This lilac mood mixing rhyme and reason
Is my trellis of solitude where I abide
*
* * *

I hold your image with a clothespin smile
My line of memories amid baskets of thought
I leaf through our laughter for a little while
Before closing the pages and tying the knot

*
* * *

My mind wanders across our sky blue trails
My hand against your cheek one last time
Coffee table books, Ann of Green Gables tales
Is that you mama turning the wind chime?

*
* * *

I saw a redbird this morning; he was peeping in
He missed us watching him, you and I
Misty eyed I whispered, "She's in heaven my friend"
He chirped a few times; his final good-bye

*
* * *

Well, I must go now, at least for today
Everyone tells me it'll get better each day
I suppose it's true; that's what they say
Come back pretty redbird, don't fly away
