The Farewell
The thunder pounded the skies with flash and rumble,
as rain fell in torrents on friends and loved ones,
as we stood in mournful silence,
It was as if God had rolled open the floodgates of heaven
to ensure your vessel passage across the river to stand before the throne.
I thought such a blessing had been taken from this life,
and entered into the next,
where there is no sorrow, tears or pain,
only life and abundant joy.
My dearest your struggle is over, your reward is great,
for God so loved you, and so favored your heart.
We all stood in congregation, gathered for your journey home.
Our faces comprised a sad smile, some with tears flowing in abundance,
while others stood solemnly behind eyes distant and withholding.
My heart ached with the reality of you no longer being present.
It also ached for all gathered,
I knew they were all pained in the same terrible grief.
My pain intensified for those dearest,
who love you as no other can, for whom in this instant
I found my protection of their tender hearts incomplete.
I could find no words or embrace, nor tears that could heal their hearts.
In silent prayer I glorified God for your earthly life that he lovingly shared with us,
while earnestly seeking the Father to comfort your sweet ones who love you so.
Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Sister, Aunt, Cousin, Mother-in- Law and Dear Friend.
In all these appointments you exceeded the standard of love and care.
For all my days, I will cherish the lovely heart and soul,
which God blessed me to encounter in my journey.
Your farewell was bound to be, I know,
just as all of us are one day to make the sojourn.
Yet, even with the knowledge that all of us will eventually bid farewell
when our journey here is through,
still my heart weeps at the thought of the farewell to you.
