a thought intruded
on the bus...
with strangers, all ages,
surrounding me...
how awkward
in junior high
it was
taking showers in gym class
with strangers
I didn't like.
memorizing facts
ancient History, math equations,
I'd forget
over summer vacations.
and
reading words in texts
that were versions of truth
written by people who were
faceless, unaccountable.
they wrote words that belonged to them
and not me. variations on the truth
pawned off as facts.
in high school,college,
I went to parties, clubs, discos
to forget about life and to be
among more strangers. most faces I'd forget.
some I'd take with me temporarily.
some of them are now long gone.
I was thinking today, as I was riding
the bus, how many strangers there were
around me...and how, soon, I'd
forget them too.
and how many people there were
I had spoken to that day that had
already forgotten me.
good creatures...be kind to one another.
but in being kind to all creatures foremost
we may then find the humanity in one another
even if the interchange
is temporary.
every pebble thrown into the water
makes a ripple.
