 Poetic-Verses from ATHANASE

MANLIO ARGUETA

Manlio Argueta

Frère, tu es resté magnanime

Dans toutes les cruelles circonstances

De ta vie orphique !

L’insensée et violente vanité

N’a jamais pu crucifier

Ton cœur de pur diamant !

Toi,

L’homme allégrement innocent

Et obstinément heureux !

Toi,

Qui avances par béances successives

Vers l’essentiel !

Tu as des secrets impalpables,

Manlio Argueta

‘Childhood for me meant nights spent thinking about the coming day, sick mothers, absent fathers, departed brothers who soon forgot you as they never again returned home.’

Manlio Argueta

Brother, you remained magnanimous

Despite the many cruel circumstances

Of your Orphic life!

Senseless and violent pride

Could never crucify

Your heart of pure diamond!

You,

A man cheerfully innocent

And obstinately happy!

You,

A man who pushes on through your wounds

Towards the essential!

Tonight, moved to tears,

Tears that more readily because we are so near in spirit,

I read your verse

And close the door

To stop the harsh October wind

Entering the house.

Oh, how everything that your wonderstruck soul,

Alien to all tacit violence,

Touches with its innocent eyes

Becomes droll, nostalgic, noble!

You have secrets that can’t be touched,

Sunflower stalks for a sabre,

Yellow grapes to speak of

Your vulnerable tenderness!

Aloft in the imperial splendour of days

You render my poverty more acceptable,

More welcoming in its pure and vibrant quietness!
