I realize I am not alone
The little boy that stays to long
Dad sez
"Doesn't dandy have a home?"
Mom sez
"Shush--you know?" I can hear
"All right he can stay for dinner!"
Mom worked long into the night
Dad knew when payday wuz
My friend was the Governor's nephew
His uncle took a liking to me
I once sat on the Governors lap!
I took leftovers home to Sis
I remember as a young Airman
Serving in Korea I saw the orphan kids
They would stay around our garbage can too long
Visiting the orphanges on Thanksgiving
Bringing sports equipment playing with kids
I remembered the days I was hungry
One day a stray dog followed me home
The kids nodded he was skinny as a bone
It isn't only humans who stayed too long
At night we would see the same orphans
Searching through our garbage cans for food
We went to the mess cooks
We would throw that away anyway
Sack lunches were put on top of our garbage cans
One day a note was left behind
Trust me a pet especially a dog was not safe at night
Not one that was fat and happy and nappy
The note was simple, "No one well harm
your dog Mr Airman, we are keeping him safe
Remembering the days I stayed too long
Thankful today for what I can share
Not just Thanksgiving every day someone is hungry
I haven't forgot the days when it was me!
