I just wrote a poem, rather facetious, about old girlfriends.
and songs they were singing at the time. Upon reflection and
re-reading one I would like to explain. It's the rest of the
story: Half way through my senior year and at the start of
basketball season my mother and Step dad found us a new home.
A boarded up dump to a middle class neighborhood. It was hard
on me never the less. Here I was a senior having no idea where
the new school was located. I was not a good student all I had
interest in was sports. I knew no one school had already begun
and I had to registrar. I saw kids standing at the bus stop.
Kids much younger than this six foot three boy who grew up in
a tough neighborhood. The kids were picking on this extremely
fat girl. Calling her a pig. One who knows me you do not pick on
women in front of me. I lifted up the most obnoxious of the group
off his feet and told the others to come and help the boy who
was whimpering. I took him up to apologize on his knees.
Most assuredly this girl and I became friends. She like me was
upper class. Without pointing out the obvious she needed to ride
the bus to school. We were both rather misfits. I needed grades to
play basketball. She helped tutor this dummy. Nothing romantic
we giggled and shared love of music and teasing. I graduated and
then joined the military. I forgot this girl. I found work after
service at Boeing. One day this beautiful thin gorgeous person
called my name, She Said, "She said you don't remember me Dandy?"
How could I the lady toad had turned into a Princess. Boeing was
laying off. She was enrolled in college. What does a guy in love do?
With a 1.8 grade average I was lying and said I was thinking about
doing that too. She sent an application from school to my house.
Mom filled out the application and to this day I don't know how it
happened. I never played high school ball but played in Men's leagues
with ex-college players. I was named as a top three recruit at school.
It was only friendship and at school she notified me she was engaged
and about to be married to a boy who was off doing residency as a Doctor.
I was in the last place anyone would expect this boy to be--College???
And there I met Sheri!
