Through the eyes of my childhood

Living in a family that influenced my day to day existence,
Held within boundaries laid down with parental insistence,
Still I had own free spirit, coupled with ignorance of mind,
Developing a personal taste for culture, an individual kind,

Listening to “The Little Sparrow” sing, this I'll never forget,
Of Edit Piaf's magnificent French rendition of “No Regret,”
Then there's a voice so deep, it makes your wine glass quiver,
Marvellous Paul Robeson's singing “Sanders of the River,”

I abhorred school music class, a disruptive influence at best,
However outsmarted by my teacher, who put me to the test,
Listen to what you like, take your selection back here to me,
Khachaturian, Handel and Ravel to mention but only three,

I read CS  Forrester at school, Nevil Scute's book at home,
I scared myself silly with the outcome of that nuclear bomb,
Then the Bay of Pigs confrontation to this child was immense,
Living four minutes from extinction, emotions were intense,

Was I old enough to understand?, yet still naive enough to trust,
Our leaders in power prevented us becoming radio-active dust,
As a child I saw what was wrong, yet I could offer no solution,
With the vision of my childhood I determined my own evolution.
