In Ashes
Sitting in the dust
With my tears mingling with ashes
I said my last prayer
While the world played with matches
I’ve been broken so many times
Seems like good never wins
If I open my heart to you
Filled with love pain and sin
Will you promise not to break it?
Like so many have done before
And if I trust you with my life
As I pass from the earth once more
Will you promise just to take it?
Even if all you do is shape it
Into something new
Even if you break it
Promise I belong to you
And I will do something I haven’t done before
I will hold on to you
And believe every word you wash to shore
From your will, from your heights
Every moment every day
Because here’s my heart I gave it over
Do with it what you may
Sitting in the dust
With my tears mingling with ashes
I said my first real prayer
While the world played with matches
