she died
and then the world
turned cold
cloudy
frozen.

her two old dogs howled
as she entered
the afterlife.

confused
her stub-tailed cat
snuggled closer to her right
shoulder
tried hoarding
her last warmth.

her house listened for
her heart beat
but found instead a
lingering echo of her
last sigh.

her small chest
having risen and fallen for
the last time.

her lips forming the
singular words
good-bye.

in the afternoon
the last rays
of the sun said
to her
remember me
I was with you
all the days of your life.

on Saturday
the ME and the police
pried open the silence.

they found the two lost
dogs next to her
their tails wagging
hopeful
that something could be
done.

the stub-tailed cat
escaped between the tall legs
of the blue men
as the protective silence
that had formerly enveloped
them all
escaped like
air through a helium
balloon.

who were these intruders who
crashed into
their sacred silence.
and why did they want
to take away their friend?
