Flying on wings of remembrance
my battered soul grows weary
visiting the spaces left, where
dreams go dark and bleary
So many hurts and so much pain
have haunted sleepless nights
Love's slipped away repeatedly;
my heart's now locked up tight
Disappointment carves a path
along my life's lone road
tripping, where I used to dance
shy steps, where once bestrode
But angels lift this crumpled girl
gentle arms enfolding me
without a word my silent tears
are banished so lovingly
Deep within my troubled mind
a small, insistent voice
drowns words of harsh maleficence –
"You'll always have a choice!"
"Lift up your head and carry on
your burdens will grow lighter;
with heaven's help and beatitude
your future's getting brighter."
With trembling limbs beneath me
grasping my champion's hand;
turning towards the mirror's face
I'm struck dumb where I stand
No ministerial spirit,
no seraphim's presence there
only my own familiar smile
looks back, so bright and fair
Today the world looks kinder
there's peace and joy newfound;
trusting in God, myself, and life
my gratitude knows no bounds!
