Winter

When I say it was so freaking cold this winter
I mean just that
So cold people brought out
Only what was necessary
On the New York City subways and busses
People stood and sat and shivered
With blank exhausted stares

Sitting on the train on that long ride
Between 125st and 59st
I looked around at bundled people
Offering a silent invitation
To smile and nod
You know that look
When you catch someone's eyes
And you smile hello fellow traveler

Well no such luck
This winter in New York
We left our smiles inside
And brought our layers of clothes instead

Today for the first time in a long time
It was almost sixty degrees
As I walked outside I was greeted
By a big smile from my neighbor

I was so delighted
To see so many smiles
On that ride from
125st to 59st

Can I tell you I am so freaking happy
That winter is almost over

Come to me summer 2014.
