I wish I coulda known
better, more often.
I wish I coulda cared less
about being thin.
I wish I coulda known the whole
score and softened
my heart
to be ready for the
bruise.
How I wish I coulda known how
to win.
I wish I coulda.

I wish I coulda cared far less.
I wish I coulda dared more to stand.
I wish I coulda measured closer
to the best.
I wish I coulda made some better plans.
Yes, I wish I coulda.

I wish I woulda stared 'em down straight.
I wish I woulda aimed my shoulders high.
I wish I woulda put a deafer ear to their hate.
I wish I woulda called 'em on their lies.
How I wish I woulda.

I wish I woulda asked her so much more.
I wish I woulda written her a poem or two.
I wish I woulda shared my heart with him
more often.
I wish I woulda minded the march of time
and loosed up the screws.
Lord, I wish I coulda.
How I wish I woulda.

Sometimes I feel
like a child
standing in a far off
fallow field
knee deep in the mud
and no place
left
to go.

regrets, we all have 'em.
some, weighing us down
