Welcome to My life in the shadows

THE MONSTER INSIDE

(Page 201 from the new book)

I rose behind-hand late,
my soggy crime concealed
by a symphony of screaming sirens
incestuously yielding
to a choke of terror, a frozen heart
stiff with daylight.
After a sip of instant breakfast
I drive almost skittishly
through another post suicide morning
singing gibberish notes to myself as
I somehow make my way
down the spinney spittle-back freeway
slithering between lanes and yellow lines
alive in the lights, red and white
and moving ever so willfully
down the prickly spine
in long lazy curves.
Out here the whole damn city
seems to fold in on itself
in cannibalistic moves
as the driver in front of me
motions with her high-sign-finger,
her car
seemingly pounding on the asphalt table;
I’m hungry, I’m hungry
come feed me,
as I slipped between dark and light
hitting my can,
like an escape artist.

The book is about addiction, my addiction. It is the story of addiction and recovery and the hand that God played in the saving of just one life...Mine. It is a story told through poetry and pros as one poem folds into the other, like days without end.
