I don't remember much of these years
Give me a break I was just a kid
I had my first girlfriend
She was five or six like me
Her Mom was supposed to be my baby sitter
She put us out to play
And that was the last we saw of her
My Father was an independent unemployed
coal truck driver probably why I saw little
of the baby sitter he always had girlfriends
But that was when I met Barney
I forget the girls name and I would play
In the road construction pipes
Snakes and spiders and fun things to tease
Occasionally a rat or black widow spider
Barney came one day and chased the rats away
He like me was a stray, a German--Shepard
Yes, Pearl Harbor made playing outside scary
All the air raid sirens and Hitler was coming
My six foot nine inch father was afraid of Hitler
But he liked to beat up men and women smaller than him
So I used to get candy and ice cream from the policeman
Sorry that's all I remember about those years
Barney, and I were taken to live with Grandma and Grandpa
Some of the best years of my life
We had eggs and real food to eat and Grandpa was not afraid
Unlike my Dad Grandpa wanted to join the fight
He was a shipbuilder and needed to build ships
I have to go now but later well read from the
book I have come to love: Chronicle of the twentieth Century
It is fun relating to how I fit in it
I am not sure I like what's happening today
Reading some anti-American propaganda is making me angry
If you don't like this wonderful place
Take the next boat back to where you came from
I came originally from Ireland and love America
