I had confronted my Father
Told Mom I want to be a Marine
She signed papers so I could
underage join the National Guard
Jim and I were still in high school
We took our training weekends in Eastern Washington
Algerian rebels launch big attack
Cease-fire halts Israeli- Egyptian battle
James Dean, idol of youth, is killed
I was backup Center on the basketball team
I didn't know it but I had a new girlfriend
Every night two girls came and watched practice
One of the players said, "Your girlfriends here Ron!"
I was hurt Ron was a ladies man I was not
After practice I noticed the girls waited for the bus
It was dark and I saw her walking home alone
I lived five miles from school, I purposely missed the bus
I would walk Ron's girl home, and then run five miles home
"That is how you met your wife Dandy?" I had a secret crush
How could a girl so popular ever like a boy like me?
One night I came home and Mom said we are moving
It was the deal of a lifetime and out of the ghetto
For each deal to work we had to move that weekend
The problem was I did not get to tell Ron's girl
We moved overnight and I entered a new school
When I was able I went back to my old school
Ran into her girlfriend and said, "Do you--""
"Don't you go near Cheryl, she had no idea where you went
She cried for weeks, now she has a new boyfriend."
1956, the year of my graduation, bus lines integrated
In the new school I had to actually open a book
In speech Arts I was Mr Robert in a school play
I had no friends in the new school so graduation
I looked all week for a job in tough times
When the other kids came out looking Monday I was working
In the National Guard on the assembly line building Boeing Airplanes
The boy who would never amount to anything
Ran into his first girlfriend she had a pink slip
My friends said, "Stay away from her. She's an alcoholic
And lives with guys who beat her, sure enough she was bruised
1957 I would join the United States Air force
I was too tall for Submarines had bad eyesight and deaf in one ear
The Marines only wanted a few good men
I would later take Medic training at Great Lakes Navel base
21 years old I wore uniforms of three branches of the armed forces
Took Marine boot camp, Navy medics are Marine medics
Returned to the Air Force and was later sent to Osan, Korea
