'Time Ticks Away'

Time ticks away, it waits not for laughter,
It waits not for tears, nor fear
Of the great hereafter.

Time ticks away, it continues to fleet,
And the hands on the clock dare not repeat
The seconds, already gone.

Time ticks away, you can even feel it going,
As you sit in repose, all the while knowing
Each movement, brings you closer to the end.

Time ticks away, it continues to speed,
Regardless of want, regardless of need
To slow, its hurried course.

Time ticks away, I wish it weren't true,
For it ticks away time for those dear to you
And this, is the hardest.

Time ticks away, 'till it is all spent, and gone,
And it's there I wish to be, with all dear to me
For eternity, and beyond.

~ I do not think there is anyone over the age of twelve - possibly older - that does
not think about time passing, in many cases the end of time or, the end of their time.
I can remember thinking about this when I was very young, and of course many times since.
Now that I'm older I find these thoughts recurring even more. I think it is human nature,
and especially so when those closet to us grow old. It is not only a constant sword over
our head, it is a deep, heart-felt fear within our very being. With the recent horrific
happenings in Montreal and Ottawa, it brings these thoughts not only to mind, but into
crystal clear view. It also makes one realize that it can happen at any time, and at any
age. It is within this sad and heartbreaking realization that this poem came to be. ~ R. B.
