It was not love at first sight
Afterall, reality you were nine
You were a little brat,
"Mommy Mommy--they are hitting
golf balls at our swing--!"
I was the older boy up the street
It was our putt putt golf course
The end of the swing was the sand trap
I thought these eyes saw the end of you
The next time I saw you we were Freshman
in college,I still five years older
After serving my duty in the Air Force
Trust me you were no longer a little girl
Job market tight a basketball scholarship
Of all the ways to meet, my girlfriend said,
"I'd like to introduce you to Sheri.
I think you may have gone to the same school?"
so pretty and nice and then my girlfriend came back
You say love at first sight--no, one girl at a time!
You used to walk under my window as I studied.
All the guys catcalling and watching
I thought how vain--didn't know girl in middle was blind
The girl in the middle counting her steps
Not vanity just things you still do today
It's a kiss of death when your girlfriend says,
"We are too close, too fast, we should see others!"
Broken hearted, you walked by and all I saw was a beautiful
girl my confidence was hurt and I not in your league
When you look back at it what record did I play every day
The Flamingoes, "I only have eyes for you!"
Or the Crewcuts playing, "Dreamy eyes!"
She said see other girls. OK, it took so much courage
facing rejection I asked you to join me for coffee
One look in your pretty eyes and I knew my girlfriend was right
She should see others I was in love
November 17th it well be our fifty third anniversary
But of coarse you have been in my life since the age of nine
Our children grown with children of their own
AS I write this the Flamingoes are singing, "I only have eyes for you!"
And am thinking back to that day of the first meeting
"Mommy Mommy the boys are hitting golf balls at us!"
Ok, not every love story starts out with, "Dreamy eyes"
