MRS. THOMAS (RHODA) VAUGHNMrs. Vaughn lived behind me For some years Where I lived was the Vaughn's fruit orchard before Looking out Northwest She has a lovely life in Pendleton Often I think of her For telling me to Count my blessings When I feel defeated She and Thomas Were the best neighbors Because all of it used to be their Land up there on the South Hill She knew the history and Would tell me of the histories Of Pendleton Oregon... ...When calling cards were in style With foyer's having 12-foot ceilings Little tables with a basket on top For guests to leave their cards The Vaughn House was built Between 1850-1899 (By Thomas Vaughn's grandfather Who was a dentist Back so long ago) 1867, I think Sleeping there before In Rhoda's bed The cars on Southwest Thirteenth Hitting the gravel on those cold November days crackled up To the front bedroom there On the second floor Awakening me Twelve-foot-high-cove ceilings With trim at nine feet up Then wallpapered ceilings Above that White shag carpet A spiral staircase A main staircase Balconies off most rooms Window seats in the dining room With a beautiful white fireplace There to warm your bones The wrought-iron fence with lion heads on it The water-radiator-heating system throughout the house Old lilac trees along the Long walk to the front porch 100-year-old-black-locus trees twisted into the sky Some it seemed 70 foot high Flowers of all kinds by season Purple violets on-the-ceiling wallpaper In a girl's room with a poster bed Covered with a crocheted while top French Provincial Bedroom Set Eye-lid window in a master closet Tapestry on the living-room wall Of the gondolas in Venice Expensive-silk-wall covering of the late 1800's Old antique couch Rocking chairs of wicker on the side porch African violets in the kitchen window The Gold Cadillac Seville Mrs. Vaughn drove With leather-ladies gloves on Her delicate hands Blonde hair Blue eyes Gracious woman Who left me to feel Mrs. Vaughn I love her real. 5/19/2014 0400 cj The Vaughn House will always be THE VAUGHN HOUSE to me It's yellow structure sits Between Goodwin Lane and Goodwin Place and Thirteenth Street in Pendleton, Oregon, USA After Dr. Carrington owned the house A lady and her son own it They have destroyed much of the Precious old of the house (Locus trees, tapestry in LR, etc) Mrs. Vaughan died 1/5/2015 I just found out today 12/6/2015 Glad have a memory of her. http://www.pioneerchapel.com/obits/obituary.php?id=521630 Vote for this poem
