On the day each of my children were born
I would empty my pockets put change in a jar
Surprising how quickly the jar would fill
When the jars filled enough I would purchase a stock
Today that is a bad investment
The idea was to pay for college tuition
Children were graduated from High school
That money accumulated was the present
At best it was their choice
Enough to buy them each a working car
The car would be used to find work
Both of my children went to college
Each had a great work ethic
Something was left over it went into a college fund
My children had children and I still collect change
All five Grand kids, two graduated, one about to are college age
I have only one still in High school
His sister is passing on her car to him
I have been hearing about black and white racial riots
Thinking really why can we not get along
There are those in this world who would promote hatred
I am not rich but each child is well educated and a car to get to work
As I walked by I saw the dislike in this families eyes
A young black family cute young daughter and a second in a father's arms
They were shopping as I had to at a thrift store
I handed the man two dollars and told them about the jar
I know they found it strange coming from a white man
Today I found another couple and did the same thing
Though I am far from rich a dollar might be doubled
A couple of one race might see another in need
If it could do one thing towards race relations I would be happy
If you of all races joined me I would be ecstatic we are all family
The boy holding a sign on the corner I drive by
He is not looking for work he is hustling for drugs
What he need is work ethics he probably has a car
Maybe he should take a bath and cut his hair and
save money by having less tatooes and more effort
I choose who needs help carefully and not by color of skin
