I watched three drunks staggering from the bushes.Obviously been
drinking one night. I was sitting on the steps of my place of
work. The first two made a gesture asking for a handout and
moved on. The third said, "God bless you!" turned to face a
white Church high on the hill. Bowed and prayed and gave the
sign of the cross. Waved to me and hustled to catch his friends.
I called him back and gave him money for breakfast and wrote this.
LET NO MAN BE DENIED
I spied the steeple of a Church
High upon it's lofty perch
From miles, upon miles on an unkempt Hill
One could see the spire still
The people's sang about
Peace throughout the land without a doubt
There were song of love and fellowman
When in stepped a drunk with trembling hand
As he staggered in and through the door
He fell collaspsing upon the alder floor
Form the congregation, "Get rid of this man
He is not with us not in God's etermal plan"
Up stepped one man who with loving heart
Gave of his tithe to give this drunk a new start
Year passed: A deed that was long forgot
A new Church was being build upon the spot
A man stepped forth with a generous gift
"I was down the White Church gave me a lift"
Today a Church stands proud for all to see
And the peoples messages came from above to me
In voices they sing--and some have cried
The words of love, "Let no man be denied!"
*It was originally titled the "White Church on the hill."
Today on Galer street the Church stands still
