I do not doubt that there is a reason
Why the sun did not come up this morning
Perhaps the universe is just tired
From its infinite clock work of super human efficiency
But it caught us all unaware. I woke at 9 AM
Annoyed that I had woke before the sun came up
And stumbled in the darkness till I switched on a light
And stared at the clock which had surely stopped at 9 PM the night before
And the newscaster was as bewildered as I, reporting that the sun
Had stopped somewhere over Asia and that the oceans were sloshing
Back and forth as though the earth had stopped turning causing
Great damage to coastal cities and ports all around the world
I do not doubt that there is a reason
Why the sun did not come up this morning
But it caught us all unprepared
My neighbors are all on the street with flashlights
Talking to each other in hushed tones shining their flashlights
On flowers and trees who are wondering why the dawn
Didn’t come to evaporate the dew and feed their petals
With nourishing warmth after the cool of the night
And in gardens of Kashmir the sparrows and finches
Are bewildered that night did not come to send them to roost
Perhaps it is because all the monks are gone from the monasteries
In Tibet who each day recited the Holy Word that sustains the universe
Or perhaps it is because all the Nuns are silent in empty convents of Europe
Who each morning had thanked the Mother of the World for her Blessings
Or perhaps it because the last shaman in Mexico died unable to find
An apprentice worthy of the ancient wisdom he carried in his breath
I do not doubt that there was a reason
Why the sun did not come up this morning
I sit in the darkness and take a deep breath wondering how many I have left
And recall the ancient myth of the breath of God moving on the face of the waters
Why the sun did not come up this morning
Perhaps the universe is just tired
From its infinite clock work of super human efficiency
